Top Interior Design Trends in 2023

Top Interior Design Trends in 2023 | And how to implement them in your home.

It might seem early to start looking at 2023 interior design trends, but with the new year whizzing towards us at a rate of knots, it’s a great time to begin thinking about your next home styling project.

From whimsical design and retro favourites to layers, lighting and inviting nature in, there’s a significant shift happening that sees sterile structure being replaced with personalisation and intentional design that promotes authentic connection.

So without further ado, here are the

Interior design trends that will be making a splash in 2023.

Lovely lighting.

Once functional and no-frills, lighting was simply an afterthought - something to make sure you could see in the dark.

But with so many options now available, it’s easy to create atmosphere, make a statement and change the entire mood of your home with just the flick of a switch.

And in 2023, the focus will be on both form and function - lighting that encourages productivity while relaxing your mind.

The best way to achieve it? Layering.

Use brighter task lights to illuminate workspaces like kitchens and desks, while making the most of soft natural light and well-placed lamps to create ambiance in other areas.

Ode to eras past - with a sustainable edge.

As people look to add interest, embrace authenticity and inspire happiness in their homes, the styles of days gone by are making a huge comeback.

Think geometric shapes, glossy furnishings and sultry lighting of the art deco era, pops of colour, psychedelic patterns and eclectic tones of the retro 60s, or the history and character wrapped up in vintage furniture.

Even Hollywood glam is back, with sumptuous texture and lashings of extravagant colour.

With sustainability and upcycling driving interior design in 2023, why not try mixing old with new?

Give existing furniture a revamp, add one-of-a-kind vintage pieces from antique stores or look for hidden treasures at a garage sale or in a family member’s back shed.

Outside is in.

Nature lovers rejoice because plants are back!

2023 will see more interior designers and stylists focusing on adding a touch of greenery to bring fresh energy into homes, inspire wellness and create soothing sanctuaries.

And not only plants, but other natural textures too.

The beauty of imperfection is being embraced, and elements like stone, timber and natural fibres work beautifully to create interest and a layered look.

Feel free to let your imagination (literally) run wild - decorate with pot plants, introduce timber furniture and roll out a woven mat. Consider bamboo blinds, woolen rugs or a statement stone coffee table, and make texture the star of the show.

Restful retreats.

With the onset of the ‘work from home’ era, the open floorplans of the past are no longer as desirable as they once were.

While open plan equals easier connection, in 2023, more and more homeowners will look to create intentional spaces within their homes to offer restful escape.

When it comes to styling your own space? Think cosy nooks, soothing spa-like bathrooms and backyard retreats where the hustle and bustle of everyday life just melts away.

While interior design and styling a home is subjective, there are still some trends that will definitely be out of favour once new year rolls around.

So which interior design faux pas should be avoided in 2023?

  • Mass-produced anything.

While your run-of-the-mill commercial furniture is fine in small doses, don’t take your design inspiration straight from an IKEA catalogue. Intersperse this kind of furniture with personalised pieces that express who you are and make you feel good.

Plus, it’s always good to keep in mind that ‘fast furniture’ - while a great way to save money upfront - simply isn’t sustainable, negatively impacting the environment (and your hip pocket) in the long run because it simply doesn’t last.

  • Less is best, or not.

The name of the game is balance. While personalising a space means bringing in the things you love, too much of a good thing can lead to overwhelm. After all, space equals calm, so make sure you don’t overdo it, leaving room for positive energy to flow.

On the flip side, minimalism can be miserable. Untextured spaces and cavernous quarters have ruled the roost for few years now, but we’re starting to see people drawn back to depth and colour.

  • Immaculate ‘broad market appeal’.

While it’s a nice concept for the real estate pages, where you live shouldn’t feel staged, with nothing out of place.

No-one wants to feel like a visitor in their own home.

Your home should feel comfortable, relaxed and lived in, so you’re not constantly worrying you’ll mess up an ideal.

  • Design that doesn’t reflect where you live.

It’s nice to imagine our home whisking us away to another place - somewhere far away from our everyday lives.

But just like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, choosing designs that seem out of place for your locale simply doesn’t work.

Drawing inspiration from our surroundings feels more natural and provides a seamless (and stress-free) transition when coming home. Think ‘modern coastal’ by the sea, ‘industrial chic’ in the city and ‘rustic farmhouse’ in the hills.

Who knows what 2023 will bring. But when it comes to interior design and style trends, there’s so much inspiration to draw on.

Gone are the days of ‘standard design’. So be bold. Push boundaries. Be yourself.

Introduce colours and textures into your home that convey your personality, include sentimental things that evoke happy memories, and embrace trends that bring you joy.

Make 2023 all about creating functional layers and meaningful spaces that reflect you and your family!
